NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

  • Country: Tanzania
  • Location: South Eastern Tanzania
  • Language Spoken: Swahili
  • Area (Km): 30,893 Km Squares
  • Visa Requirement: yes

Nyerere National Park is Tanzania's largest national park, located in the southeastern part of the country. It was formerly the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve and is named in honor of Julius Nyerere, Tanzania's first president. Unlike the busier northern circuit parks like the Serengeti, Nyerere is more remote, offering a less crowded, more "wild" safari experience.

Wildlife and landscape

  • Biodiversity: Nyerere has one of the highest densities of wildlife in Africa, including large populations of elephants, buffalo, hippos, and crocodiles.
  • African wild dogs: It is particularly famous for having one of Africa's most significant populations of the endangered African wild dog.
  • The Rufiji River: Tanzania's largest river, the Rufiji, flows through the park. Its network of lakes, channels, and swamps attracts huge concentrations of wildlife, especially during the dry season.
  • Diverse ecosystems: The landscape features a mix of miombo woodlands, open grasslands, and riverine forests.

Safari activities

Nyerere is unique because it offers a wider variety of activities than many other Tanzanian parks.

  • Game drives: Traditional 4x4 vehicle safaris are available and provide excellent opportunities to see the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino).
  • Boat safaris: A major highlight of Nyerere is the boat safari on the Rufiji River. This offers a different perspective for viewing wildlife like hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds up close.
  • Walking safaris: These allow visitors to explore the bush on foot with an armed ranger. It is a thrilling way to experience the smaller details of the ecosystem and feel more immersed in nature.
  • Fly-camping: Some operators offer overnight fly-camping trips, where you sleep out in the bush in a temporary camp for a truly adventurous experience.
  • Hot air balloon safaris: Hot air balloon trips are also available for a spectacular aerial view of the park.

Best time to visit

  • Dry season (June–October): This is the best time for prime wildlife viewing. The vegetation is sparser, and animals congregate around permanent water sources like the Rufiji River, making them easier to spot.
  • Green season (November–May): The landscape is lush and green, and migratory birds arrive, making it excellent for birdwatching. However, some roads may be challenging due to rain, and some lodges close in April and May.

Access

  • Flights: The quickest way to get there is by a short, scheduled flight (around one hour) from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam to one of the park's airstrips.
  • Road: Driving from Dar es Salaam takes approximately 5–7 hours, depending on the park gate and road conditions.
